Reykjavík, Iceland’s capital and largest city, is the world’s northernmost capital, known for its rich history and modern significance. Established as a permanent settlement in 874 AD, Reykjavík officially became a trading town in 1786 and has since developed into the nation’s center of culture, commerce, and government. Today, with a population of 140,000 in the city and 248,000 in the Capital Region, it stands as a model of sustainability, celebrated for being one of the cleanest, greenest, and safest cities globally.
